Daniel Ricciardo won two of the three Formula BMW Asia races held at the Bira Circuit in Thailand prior to the Shanghai F1 Grand Prix support races held earlier this month. Fastest in practice in Shanghai he had high hopes of winning before the Formula One Team bosses. However the weather played its part with qualifying and both races turning out to be wet. This was the first time Daniel had driven a car in the wet and it gave his more experienced rivals a significant edge.
A fighting fourth in the first Shanghai race was followed by a fine third place and trip to the Formula One podium to receive his trophy from BMW F1 chief, Dr. Mario Theissen. “Daniel learns fast and after struggling a little in the first race he really excelled in the second race, mixing it with first and second in the Championship, Sam Abay and Earl Bamber.” reported Eurasia Motorsport’s Mark Goddard.
The Formula BMW Asia Series now travels to the made for F1 circuit, Zhuhai, in Southern China for the final round of the Championship. The race winner receives 20 points and with pole position worth one point there are 63 points up for grabs in Zhuhai. Abay leads Bamber by 16 points with Daniel 59 points behind the leader. Whilst it would take a miracle to win the championship the aim is to go out on a high and repeat the race wins in Thailand.
“Eurasia currently lies second in the Team Championship, just 39 points behind Meritus and with a possible 108 team points still to be won we feel we have a good chance of winning. If Daniel can win races it will really help the team and we can all go into the off season as winners” remarked Goddard.
