Eurasia Motorsport confirms that former Formula 1 driver Roberto Merhi is to compete in the #36 Ligier JS P217 in the upcoming Asian Le Mans Series starting in Shanghai China later this month.
Roberto teams up with Intercontinental GT Challenge race winner Nick Foster and Asian Le Mans Series specialist Aidan Read in a strong Platinum/Gold/Silver line up.
With the #1 Eurasia Racing Team New Zealand entry already confirmed, the Asian-based team now has two highly competitive LMP2 line-ups complete ahead of the first round of the championship which gets underway in November 22-24.
Roberto brings a wealth of both pace and experience to the team, ranging from Formula 1 and LM-prototype competition to championship success in European F3.
The Spaniard started his racing career in Formula Renault 2.0 Italy in 2006 before finishing second in the championship in 2008. After spells in multiple F3 championships, he dominated in 2011 in the F3 Euro Series with 11 wins from 27 races and the title to boot.
His career continued to progress well, with third position in Renault 3.5 in 2014 whilst taking the Caterham F1 test role in the same year and then racing in Formula One with the Manor Marussia team in 2015.
After the demise of the F1 squad, his relationship with Manor continued and he competed in the FIA World Endurance Championship in 2016 before heading to the FIA Formula 2 championship in 2017.
Mark Goddard, Eurasia Motorsport Team Principal
“We are delighted to welcome Roberto to our team, with all his obvious qualities. Adding him to our line up should put us in contention for victories and a genuine shot at the Championship”

“I would like to thank Eurasia Motorsport for this opportunity to get back behind the wheel, special thanks also to Dave Madgwick at Bam Motorsports for making this possible. I am very excited and looking forward to put on a great race in Shanghai”
