Daniel Ricciardo has already scored six top three finishes this year in his first season in the competitive Formula BMW Asia Series. His aim now is to reach the top step of the podium for that elusive first win. His confidence will be high after a third place finish in the previous round at the Sentul Circuit in Indonesia but even more so by a sensational debut in a one off appearance in the Formula BMW UK Championship.
Ricciardo took the opportunity to take in a round of the British Championship in the lull between the previous Asia event in Indonesia and the next round to be held at the Bira Circuit in Thailand on September 3rd. The British Championship, like most racing in the UK, is ultra competitive and the pundits expected a rookie driver from the Asian Series to struggle. Ricciardo demonstrated his talent by qualifying 13th and finishing a fantastic 8th place in the second of the two races at the ultra fast Snetterton Circuit. The first race ended with a damaged car after a first lap incident. What made his performance more remarkable was that his first experience of the track was when he drove out to qualify!
“I am sure Daniel’s experience in the UK will have instilled him with even more confidence and that he will be vying for his first win in Thailand” reported Mark Goddard of his team, Eurasia Motorsport. “Daniel has demonstrated he possesses a huge amount of talent and we know it’s only a matter of time before he wins a Formula BMW Asia race. He is racing against drivers with more experience than he has but he is getting closer to them with every race.”
